REALISTIC SCENES
"Forever Wave"- Acrylic On Canvas
24X36
Shortly after 9-11 I was compelled by a strong patriotic moment to paint my own personal stand on the event. Old Glory represents everything 'American' to me. So, it wasn't a big reach to use an image of our flag to wave at the world in total resistance to being intimidated by anyone wanting to do harm to our beautiful country.
"Harmony"- Acrylic On Canvas
16X20
Poplars are very common in the county parks where I live. In my tree series I utilize images of trees to make comments about the human condition. Here I'm showing how something so rough and rugged can support and display something so beautiful and soft.
"Inner Sanctum"- Acrylic On Canvas
16X20
Cottonwood trees are among the largest trees. Their canopies are enormous and create a wonderful quiet place for anyone under them. In the fall, the leaves are in transition and tint the hazy light that penetrates the canopy. You feel as if you are secure in your own inner sanctum.
"For The Love Of Iris"- Acrylic On Canvas
16X20
After attending several art shows and seeing at least one iris painting in each of them, I decided to investigate the floral wonder a little further. Our downtown has green belts lined with wonderful arrays of floral arrangements. Irises abound in these beds. But, off the beaten path are rows of little old homes built in the early 1900's. Small flower beds litter the backyards of these historic houses. One in particular, had these irises in a bed by the sidewalk. I liked the way the bright morning sun glinted off of the stems and blooms.
"Mountain Majesty"- Acrylic On Canvas
22X33
Estes Park, a beautiful park in Colorado, is one of our nation's natural jewels. The mountain streams, littered with gold flecks, create a wonderful white noise that takes the hiker to a quiet place in their minds. It's easy to think in a place like this.
"Open Heart"- Acrylics On Canvas
16X20
Also part of my tree series, this painting of a birch tree's bark was done for two reasons. I wanted to stretch the use of acrylics into a more realistic representation of a complex image. Also, I was intrigued with the penetrating view created by the many layers of bark pealing back. I was reminded of how we humans tend to have layers, too. We show one layer to friends, one to family, one to enemies, etc. If you peel all the layers back, you might even find one's heart.
"Stop"- Acrylics On Canvas
12X28
Our counties have a wonderful parks service. Lake Jacomo is one of the largest in our county in Missouri. A road winds around the entire lake with exits to picnic shelters closer to the lake itself. One of those shelter roads has an old stop sign at its intersection with the lake road. I thought it a significant notion for one to stop right there and just take in the fall scenery, if not for just a moment.
"Unity Chapel Arcade"- Acrylic On Canvas
25X40
The Unity World Headquarters complex is located near my hometown. It's architectural features remind one of Spain or Italy. One that I was most impressed with is the arcade that connects two buildings. The door at the end is the entry to the campus chapel. The afternoon light, direct and indirect, created several layers of colors that I thought would be challenging to represent on canvas.
"Winter Sentinels"- Acrylic On Canvas
16X20
While driving around the rural areas near my home after a long snowy night, I came upon this stand of oaks trees on a hill by the road. They were just there in the middle of the snow without anything around them for a hundred yards. They reminded me of soldiers standing on a hill in a defensive position....sentries.
"The Armada"- Acrylic On Canvas
24X36
Our local county lake has a wonderful marina. Fifty or so yards from the shore you can see rows of sailboats moored to long private docks. This group was isolated from the main group and seemed to be waiting to take on their crews when the weekend arrived. The Spanish Armada ships would moor offshore, too, while their crew spent time on land, ready to rally to their return to battle.
"Downtown LS"- Acrylic On Canvas
24X36
I love my hometown. It's one of those small towns in the mid west. This is the most familiar view of our downtown. I painted it to celebrate all of those small towns in America. They have so many similarities that one reminds us of many.

"After The Storm"- Acrylic On Canvas
16X20
I love sunrises and sunsets. The colors are usually amazing. The Northeast is known for their fierce storms that come in from the Atlantic. Their numerous lighthouses stand strong against these storms to warn mariners of local coastal dangers.
